The team at Mayford make some of the best Tempranillo in the country, this is no exception. Highly rated by Campbell Mattinson at the Winefront on release, this wine is showing very well but is not nearly at its peak. The wine itself is still quite structural but the fruit emerges with air, giving life to the firm tannins that drive the wines longevity. Put Porepunkah on your wine map next time you are headed up to Falls Creek.
The wine easily sold out on release given the high scores but is currently available by the glass at Esoterica Wine & Food in Fitzroy North (www.esoterica.wine).
Appearance – Medium purple / garnet.
Nose – Juniper, blackberries and raspberry, wet stones and cured meats.
Palate – Raspberry fruits, fresh black currents and sweet cherry pips framed by firm tannin and hint of kirsch to close. Tannin sticks to the tongue and cheeks showing great longevity and nice complexity. Sixty seconds of persistence is a great sign.
Score – 95
